The poetry of James G. Piatt

A Special Place in the Woods

There is a special place in
the woods where a hushed
stillness resides under
fallen logs and piles of
yellowed leaves. A place
where tiny colorful flowers
dwell hidden in vales
beneath verdant
mountains, and softly
flowing brooks glide lazily
through leas of aromatic
wildflowers. A place where
downy birds sing their
beautiful arias into the
early morning mist as the
sun’s rays glide softly over
oak and pine trees and
down into fields where
dew dissolves into soft
loam. It is a place where I
walk in the balmy breeze
during the soft warmth of
summer days to find
silence and solace.

Nostalgia

In an old barn a beautiful owl dies,
As dry hay, and shingles burn,
Changing life, distracting beauty…

A rutted forked road, potholes filled with
Briny tears from rain, and humanity
Going nowhere in circles…

Church bells peal a sorrowful lament
To a dead parishioner, salty tears fill
The nave with sorrow…

Mountains rising up, green with moisture,
Creating stillness across the meadowland,
And the small town below…

An old house, ghosts inside dancing
To the music of silence and mist
Forgetting life and memories…

An old gnarled Oak tree, twisted
Limbs yearning, searching for sky,
Hiding tiny birds, and sunshine…

An elderly woman, ashen hair; brittle hands,
And limbs, watching, searching for that
Which, has vanished or is yet to come…

And all the old wonderful distractions, the bakery truck,
The ice cream man, like the Miller Who could not
Contest harsh reality, all gone…

All drowned in the malaise of steel and glass
Progress, that overwhelms everything old in
Its deadly path…
