The most common problem experienced at home when it comes to the water line is the changes of pressure. It can go from really strong pressure to little and sometimes no water dripping on the faucet. Although this scenario can be troublesome, the problem behind it might only need a simple fix.
Let’s see how we can remedy this problem at home by a simple adjustment on the water pressure regulator.
- You need to locate your water pressure regulator
Every home has a water pressure regulator. This is where you can check and adjust how strong your water connection is. Usually, the normal psi or pounds per square inch of the water pressure is 80. The psi may vary depending on the location you’re in.
Checking the gauge of the water pressure will help you identify whether there’s an irregular movement with the water pressure or not. Make sure that the regulator is located where you can easily access it.
- Consult the neighborhood
Before you proceed into analyzing the water pressure issue, it’s good to also consult your neighbors if they’re experiencing the same problem. Chances are, it can be due to problems stemming from the main water provider in your area that is experiencing an issue with their system.
Before taking some steps to resolve the water pressure problem, checking in with your neighbors will save you from the hassle of trying to fix it yourself. If it really is a water system problem from the provider, then it’s best to wait with patience until they fix the problem.
If the problem is only experienced at your home alone, then proceed to the next step.
- You need to readjust the regulator to regularize the water pressure
You will need a wrench to do this task. But before proceeding, if you’re not experienced or comfortable with performing this task, it’s best to call for professional help instead.
- Notice the regulator has a huge screw on top of it you will need to unscrew that with your wrench.
- Fit the wrench to the screw and start unscrewing it slowly. Do not unscrew it all the way but only have it loose enough, seeing half of the screw out.
- Then have someone assist you to test the water pressure by turning on one of the faucets. Again, use the wrench for adjusting the water pressure.
- If the water pressure is too hard, turn the wrench counterclockwise so the pressure would go down or maintain its normal pressure.
- If the water pressure is too low, twist the wrench clockwise so it would have a stronger or normal pressure.
- Observe the water pressure by running the water for at least 2 minutes. If you’re satisfied by its newly regulated pressure, go ahead and lock the screw back to the regulator.
- If in the future, the water pressure changes, just do the necessary adjustments and the pressure will surely go back to normal once again.
After doing these steps and still the water pressure is not back to normal, it’s best to call for immediate help with an expert. Chances are, something serious or broken deep down is causing the problem which can’t be resolved with a simple regulator adjustments.
There should be an expert plumber near you that can assess the problem and provide immediate solution. Your water line or pump must have incurred leaks, rust or the regulator is broken and needs to be replaced.
Tips for Maintaining Good Water Pressure
- Always monitor any changes from the water pressure regulator. You may take notes twice a month just to see if there are significant changes from the pressure. This would help you identify if it needs such maintenance.
- Always check the pipes if it’s clogged with dirt or gunk. Overtime as the house ages, so do the water pipes. Check for any buildup or clogging in the pipes and remedy it by cleaning regularly. One of the reasons behind low water pressure is because it can’t get through the pipes due to clogging.
- Check for leaks regularly. One of the main causes of low water pressure is leaking pipes. Leaking may be caused with so many factors. Always investigate the pipes every now and then to see if you need to do some replacement before it becomes serious.
- Check the water pressure regulator. The regulator has to be functioning well throughout the time so you can make adjustments whenever experiencing water pressure problems. If you need to replace it, ensure you do it right away to avoid incurring additional problems in the future.
- Invest with an excellent water pressure pump. Due to high demand with water consumption, it can be an overall neighborhood problem. If your house is situated in an uphill location, the water is forced to travel. Improve the water flow by the aid of a water pump.
