How do you pronounce Arya?
“Arya” is pronounced “ARE – yuh”. George R.R. Martin himself has pointed out that a surprisingly large number of people pronounce it incorrectly: it consists of two syllables, not three (like how the “aria” of an opera is pronounced).
Why is Arya pronounced Aya?
In non-rhotic (aka r-dropping) accents, /r/ is only pronounced before a vowel sound. It’s dropped before consonants. So this basically comes down to whether the actor thinks of the <y> in Arya as a consonant (like in yak) or a vowel (like in many). If they consider it a consonant, the /r/ is dropped, leaving ‘Ah-yuh’.
Why does Sansa pronounce Arya differently?
Sansa has always pronounced Arya with the letter R not silent. Whereas Arya herself pronounces the name with a silent R. Because Sansa is pronouncing it like the proper lady she wants to be.
