Merriam-Webster tells us that cruller comes from the Dutch word krulle, a twisted cake, from krul, which means curly. It turns out that crueller is the proper spelling in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

Now, for the cruller. The doughnut can be spelled with the letter “c” or the letter “k” – both of which are acceptable, according to Kyle. However, he contends that there is only one pronunciation. “It’s not a ‘crawler‘ it’s a ‘cr-UH-ler,’ and it’s [of] Dutch, German, Polish, origin,” says Kyle.
