According to the council’s 2017 spelling manual: When writing the uppercase [of ß], write SS. It’s also possible to use the uppercase ẞ. Example: Straße – STRASSE – STRAẞE.
Can I write ß as SS?
It is acceptable, because it is also common to use “SS” for words written in up-case letters, as there is no capital “ß” in the official orthography rules, so the up-case version of “Straße” ist “STRASSE” (sometimes you see things like “STRAßE” which is just a horribly incorrect spelling).
Is ß still used?
While the ß was abandoned in Swiss orthography and a German reform in 1996 simplified (and reduced) its use, it is definitely still widely used and required. Specifically, the ß is used for a Voiceless alveolar fricative sound after a long vowel or diphtong. After a short vowel, ss is used.
